Up at 7 and in the park for a run at 8am with the lovely Joggers and Walkers. It was a windy day so they’d decided to avoid the coast and run through the park and along some of the Huatoki walkway. Thankfully it wasn’t too hilly and where it was people tended to bunch up and walk. Running through the bush was fab, having to concentrate on where to put your feet really takes your mind off things and there was a little group at the back with me and today, at times I was running better than them, so my legs must be getting back into it!
Had to rush off afterwards as Ana was picking me up so I could get back, shower, have breakfast and head out for our walk around Pukeiti gardens, famed for their rhododendrons (as well as being visited by David Bellamy!). It’s a yearly guided walk organised by the gardens and the council, led by a guy who works there. Took us through the gardens and out onto a trail into the bush. It’s not very well used, they like to keep it hidden as people tend to get lost in there!!
The area we were in used to be logged in late 1920-early 1930s and you can still see the old logging ditches and where the railway they dug out used to be – even some old track and sleepers are still there.
Amazing to see all overgrown with greenness now. Also got to see the world a biggest moss as determined by Kew Gardens. Frequently stolen by model train enthusiasts and architects as make to scale model pine trees!
It was a good 3.5hours, not too strenuous, but some river crossings, scrambling up paths.
All went well until I regretted the run, slipped off a rock into the river (just got my feet wet) then tripped over a log and slammed to the ground, thankfully nothing broken, grazing and a massive swelling just below my knee, just something to add to all the scratches/bruises from the undergrowth – my legs are tres sexy right now.
We got back to the lodge and I got a beer from the fridge and used it to cool my knee – no idea/frozen peas to be had, did a pretty good job!
Had a small snooze – too much sun I think – before dinner and watching ‘the complete history of my sexual failures’ brilliant film if you get the chance!
Also caught up with John, the guy who I’m hopefully going up the mountain with on Wednesday. Fair enough it was getting late, but he got told off by his dad for keeping him awake with our chat!
